Partner Projects -Connaught Hotel, Mayfair, London
The Connaught Hotel is one of London’s most prestigious hotels, located in the heart of fashionable Mayfair. It has recently benefited from a delicate restoration and extension.
The West Wing extension includes nine storeys above ground level with three levels of basement which extended to 12m in depth. The 110 year old delicate masonry facade of the existing west wing is located within 1.5m of the basement excavation on two sides. The main contractor for the project was Ellmer Construction with their piling sub-contractor, Davison Warn, being appointed on a Design and Build basis. FTBS engineering partners BLP carried out the sub-structure design for Davison Warn.
The works also included an internal propping system which was designed As 2 levels of steel waling beams with CH5 props at 6m to 8m centres. BLP produced full shop drawings for this system. 8LP carried out a ground movement assessment in order to demonstrate that the effect on adjacent buildings was ‘very slight. Our partners 8LP developed a strategy to monitor movements during the works, which included automated displacement monitoring of the adjacent buildings. The piling works were completed within strict noise and vibration limits set by Westminster Council.
